Kayaking tips for beginners: Part 1
Share
Kayaking is one of the most rewarding ways to explore the outdoors—from tranquil lakes to winding rivers and scenic coastlines. If you're new to the sport, getting started can feel a bit overwhelming. But don’t worry! With the right knowledge and preparation, kayaking can be fun, safe, and beginner-friendly.
Here are some essential tips to help you paddle your kayak with confidence:
1. Start on Calm, Flat Water
Choose a quiet lake, pond, or slow-moving river for your first few trips. Calm water makes it easier to learn basic paddling techniques without having to fight currents or waves.
2. Wear a Properly-Fitted Life Jacket
Always wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device (PFD). Even experienced paddlers wear them—it’s a simple safety essential.
3. Dress for the Water, Not just the Weather
Water temperatures can be much colder than the air. Wear quick-drying, moisture-wicking layers. If it’s chilly, consider a wetsuit or drysuit. Avoid cotton, which stays wet and makes you cold.
4. Check the Weather Forecast
Avoid kayaking in high winds, thunderstorms, or extreme temperatures. Conditions can change quickly, so always check the weather before you go.
5. Know How to Get In and Out
Use a kayak launch such as a YAKport or stable dock if possible. Sit on the edge, lower yourself in carefully, and keep your weight centered. Getting in and out can be the trickiest part for beginners! The YAKport is a universal floating kayak launch that can be used with virtually any dock or seawall providing users with an easy on and off the water.
